Leg and foot swelling is common during long flights. It’s usually caused by inactivity. As a passenger on a plane, you spend most of your time seated with your feet on the floor. This allows blood to pool in your leg veins. You may find yourself urinating frequently and sweating a lot in the first days after childbirth.
During pregnancy women normally collect more water in their bodies than they would otherwise so a certain amount of swelling in the body and especially the legs is normal. Technically this fluid retention is called edema and it can be noticeably worse in the third trimester and during summer heat. Some people experience problems on shorter flights, while others do not experience problems unless flight time is four hours or longer.
