Gothic makeup is a truly misunderstood form of artistry. Perhaps it is due to the lack of knowledge, or perhaps it is due to the misinformation found in our culture. Whatever the reason, I hope this article will enlighten you to the beauty of this art form.

Gothic Eye Makeup Tips

To get the complete gothic look, you’ll need dark lipstick, black mascara, black eye-liner, black or other dark-colored eye-shadow and a face powder that is a shade or two lighter than your skin tone. Putting the make-up on is the easy part. Putting the make-up on in a manner that would allow it to stay put and not smear requires a bit more work. For starters, you’ll want to powder your face. This will cover any oily spots you might have. Make-up does not stick well on oil, one of the main reasons make-up smears or fades.

First, consider your eye liner. There are a number of different choices here. No matter what type of look you are after, it is likely to rely heavily on eye liner. That is because of the way the eye liner plays at your eye. It provides a very deep look, drawing people's attention right to your eye. That is what you want them to do, too. Therefore, gothic eye liner is a must. As for what color to choose, you do have some options. Consider going with gray or a dark brown if your eyes are a bit lighter.

Next, you want to start applying the aforementioned eye shadow. In a sharp contrast to the pale expectations of the majority of the face, gothic makeup eye shadows come in fun hues of purple, blue, and brown to name a few. However, the most popular gothic makeup look today continues to be the traditional dark grey eye shadow with perhaps a darker black shadow mixed in.

Foundation: Gothic foundation is usually much lighter than normal skin tones. Try one to two shades lighter to begin. I often use two shades and blend extremely well! You will especially want to blend around the jaw and sides of the face. The key is blending. If you cannot blend well, try using one shade lighter until you get the hang of blending.

Gothic Whiteface Makeup

Gothic whiteface makeup is extremely popular, particularly with the younger lot nowadays. The entire makeup creates an illusion that you are pale. When trying out Gothic whiteface make up make sure that you apply the base evenly and don't overdo it. The same principle holds good for Gothic eyeliner also. You will need to apply it ever so subtly and not overdo it. It is for this reason that liquid eyeliner would work best for you.

Gothic Face Decoration

The great thing about gothic eye makeup is that there are no set rules. Some Goths will tell you that the more complicated and bizarre the eye makeup, the better. Other Goths swear by very subtle eye makeup, but then showcase other features on their faces. The eyes, however, are an excellent feature to accentuate when wearing gothic makeup.
